LA RANA is owned by Ernesto Mallen. Ernesto came to the United States from Mexico City 23 years ago when he was only 18 years of age. His first introduction to the restaurant business was working as a dishwasher at the 20/20 Italian Cafe in Laguna Hills, Orange County. His interest in the preparation of high-quality food led him into a number of different positions at various restaurants throughout the OC. He started on the job training at Peppino's as a kitchen manager, continued in 1993 as chef at Giobana's Italian Restaurant in Anaheim and then gained further experience at Bellamaris, also in Anaheim.
Armed with the experience he'd gained and a vision of the kind of first-class, authentic Mexican food he wanted to create for his customers, he opened La Rana in 2001. The restaurant has been going strong ever since. Among the many favorites and specialties of the house are La Rana's
"Barbacoa" (Roasted Lamb) which is very popular with his clientele and is only served on weekends. The dish is slow-cooked in an oven overnight and this method also produces juices for a soup that is also very popular with people. Other favorites include La Rana's handmade Quesadillas; in particular the Flor de Calabaza (zucchini flour) and the Huitlacoche, sometimes called corn mushroom or mexican truffle. Another famous & house specialty are the Tortas, the most popular is the Torta Cubana.
La Rana also serves seafood; shrimp, fish and shrimp cocktail.
La Rana also has TACO TUESDAYS featuring .99c Tacos and 1.99 Tecate Beer.
